Description
Visiting from Canberra, Kelly is a single mother attempting to get over her heartbreak. I saw her sitting at a cafe as she patiently watched over her son, Tom, chasing pigeons in the sun.
As I approached the table and asked if I could draw her a portrait of her son, she was shocked but reluctantly accepted.
Kelly's ex husband was cheating for 9 months before she found out. She told me that it was the most painful thing to try and accept that the love of your life has fallen for someone else. Tom was only 16 months old then and according to her, being a single mother is the toughest path she's experienced.
She was devastated when her ex left Australia but mentioned that she could never ever leave Tom no matter what. She didn't like children but when she had him, Kelly didn't think she could love someone else so much.
"How did you get through your ex leaving you... Do you just wish none of it happened?"
"Counseling *laughs* but no, I don't have regrets. We were together for 11 years so I met him when I was 21. You know what? The heartbreak was painful. But I would do it all again. It's beautiful and amazing to be in love, it was worth it if you ask me. And Tom is the best thing that ever happened to me, so no way will I regret whatever. Even though I'm still kind of getting over it, but I guess it's ok they're not in Australia, so I don't have to worry about bumping into them!"
Tom was smiling the entire time by the way, so I asked this awesome little boy,
"What do you want to be when you grow up?!"
"Ice!!"
"Ice? What the f.....ishes. Nemo " (woops for almost swearing)
"Yesh Ice! Mum's ice. Then I can eat myself and she will be with me forever... But I also like Spider-Man!!!"
(Note, the mum was having iced water)
"Ooh me too, he has a good bod. Why do u like spidey?"
"Because I'm scared of spiders and I don't want to be scared anymore cause I want to protect mummy!! ....Mummy, can I be excused? There's a big big bird there."
When I gave them the drawings (ok, not going to draw the boy bloody ice so obviously I picked Spider-Man), she took her wallet out and I said "NO HAVE IT!! " she was so taken a back.
"oh my, I wish there was something I could give you", to which I replied "you have, you've given me your time and story."
As she hugged me, she cried and whispered " it's nice to have some adult company, thank you"
Oh but I hugged Tom and he screamed "spaghetti" into my ear, cause you know how people say cheese when they take a photo? Yea... well, they say spaghetti.
